Junior A and B categories need a longer course. 27 miles is not nearly long enough. The juniors who would care about state championships are consistently racing CAT 4 and above. It is too long a drive for such a short race. Junior C could do the 27 mile loop. A valid question and I know we wont please everyone on this. To make a long story short, it is what it is. We spent quite a bit of time and effort discussing the course, the fields that need to fit in the day, and the best way to ensure that everyone got a decent race. The FMP course is more challenging than average. Plus, Juniors can always "race-up" an age class if they desire (just as masters can "race down" an age class if they desire). Juniors can also race in the 4/5 field (non championship) if that's their category.

Let me get this straight. You think a junior A (17/18) should race a non-championship race at their road race championships? That is simply amazing! First off, you are presenting this as a Championship event for Juniors and Masters. They should take priority over non-championship categories such as the non-championship CAT 4/5 race. Then you are suggesting a junior race up a category instead of racing in their age group because their category isn't properly scheduled? Just in case you didn't know, these kids are racing Walla Walla, Wentachee, Enumclaw and placing high. Please make it worth their time to drive 5 hours and spend tons of money to race for a state title.

It is truly a shame that attacks such as this occur but thank God, it is the only one I have ever seen. I cannot count the number of races and rides I have taken on the West side, spending $300-$800 per trip, and never even considered the type of non-advocacy remarks expressed in this individual's comments. We ride and race as amateurs because we love the sport. Comments such as the one above serve no useful purpose, certainly do not contribute to bicycle advocacy or amateur racing opportunities and tend to degrade the entire sport as a whole when so many of us are trying to bring cycling to the fore of the sports arena. I, for one, am happy to have the east side clubs putting forth the extremely hard work that goes into putting these races together, providing us further opportunities to race in different areas of the state. Keep up the great work!!!

If the state championship does not mean anything to the ASC kids than they don't have to come. I thought that Jerry and the ASC program was a good program but his words here really make me think less of it. I have driven over to the west side many times to race (including a horrible "cross" race that ASC promoted one labor day many years ago. So...whatever Jerry...don;t come and race...don't bring your team. We don't need that kind of attitude at all in the WSBA. I hope you submit a proposal to the WSBA next year and ASC can host the WA Junior road race.

Well, I am truly amazed again. If you read my request, it was simply that a true state championship be scheduled for the juniors. I am a junior advocate first and if I see something that is not benefitting juniors I will speak up. Does that make me a jerk or someone who works hard to help create good racing for juniors? I would think I am working hard for juniors. What I asked for was a race that was worth a 5 hour drive for juniors. Did I say we did not want to support the efforts? No, I said make it worth the time and money put out. What I noticed was that the 4/5 categories were going to get a much better race than the juniors and it was not the CAT 4/5 championship event.
I also questioned the comment that they can race CAT 4/5 instead. It wasn't CAT 4/5 Championships! It was Junior Championships! There is another race that is in Boise that puts on a good race that we support because it is worth the time and effort to go. We would gladly support this event if it was of distance to truly challenge the juniors.
After my request, I noticed you lengthened the race for the juniors. Great! That is what I asked for in the first place. Asking for this does not make me a jerk. Anyone who knows me and has been around me for years knows I am a nice guy but I always speak in behalf of juniors even if it doesn't make me popular. Anyone who knows anything about junior racing in Washington knows Jim Brown of RAD and I have put a ton of effort and energy into improving junior racing so they have races and do not feel like after thoughts.
Also, let me clarify, this wasn't an attack, it was a request. I didn't call anyone names, say you were stupid, or trashed those involved. I simply stated the races needed to be longer. There is nothing in my post that was an attack.
The WSBA should have guidelines listed that would define the proper lengths for championship courses. this would at least give the promoters something to guide them when trying to put together a good championship event.
For reference, national championship race lengths are as follows:
Junior 10-12: 20K Junior 13/14: 40K Junior 15/16: 70K
