14th Annual Go For the Snow Ride/Party/Extravaganza!J.D., the the Guinness Book of World Records holder for longest skid on a bicycle, hosts this crazy event each year. We start with breakfast at his house, ride to the very top of Mount Spokane, then ride back to his place for a great party. 65 miles of cold torture, but at least you're in good company. It's free, too, and there's usually corny t-shirts at the end. If you're not racing this Sunday, you should consider coming out for this. And there's $105 million in prize money, too... Ok, I won this prestigious event in 2007. Yes don't kid yourself this is a race and a darned fine one at that. I have always rode a cross bike, but I have been the exception. There are mtn bikes, hard tails, double boingers, single speeds (lots). The mountain bike would be best bet especially for descending trail 110. Just follow the rules is the ultimate key for success. Sadly I won't be in attendance for this year. I think I was 5th last year; but my shield was a heavy and slowed me down. Shield you say, yes my spartan shield.

Can you do it on a road bike? Or does the route include trails/gravel roads?

Mtn bike would be best, cross 2nd, no road bikes as there are lots of trails/singletrack. M

It's gonna be stinkin' AWESOME up there! Get ready for some "hike a bike".
I agree with Monte: this is kind of race but it also isn't. We stay as a spread-out group the whole way there and back, but at the base of the final climb (Cedar Rd. off of Country Homes) it turns into a race. First one to the top of JD's house who can down a frosty beverage is declared the winner. It hurt when I did this four years ago, but winning was worth it.
Does anyone have a pair of fast-rolling mountain bike tires? I don't want to ride knobbies all day...

I have a set of used Continental Race King 2.2 SuperSonics I could lend you. Fat, but wicked-light. These are what I used in the Midnight Century. I'd lend you my race wheels too, but they're not disc. Or... you can borrow the entire Stumpjumper if you want, it would fit you pretty well. Tape the dilithium crystal candy bar to the top tube and watch it go The RK 2.2 Supersonics aren't good on wet snow, however. They're best on dirt. So if you're considering them, factor that in.

Tom: If you're willing, I'd love to borrow any bike that's fully rigid or just front shock. My trek 6500 is out of commission right now. Can I pick up one of yours tomorrow? I'll meticulously clean it when I'm done riding it, too.

Sure, can I drop it by your place in the evening? Any particular time that would be good? I'm helping Ron B. with his Ritchey frame project around 11AM to sometime in the afternoon.
Oh, and how many bottle cages would you like on there? It takes up to three. The third one's on the underside of the downtube, so it does get dirty on wet roads.

I sent a scout up to Mt. Spokane last night to check on the conditions (not really, but he was headed that way). He turned around near the Bear Creek Lodge because there was a lot of snow on the road. Here's a photo he took:

It was epic. We made it to about 5000 feet...the last few miles was hike a bike through about 8 inches of snow. We got fresh tracks on the ride down. Nice. Stay tuned for pics and videos....

It was one of the best rides I've ever been on. Great people, awesome scenery, and epic conditions. I'll be back next year for sure.
Here's a short video I put together:
