My wife has been reading the book, "The Art of Racing in the Rain." It's a book about a dog and it's pretty poignant, profound, and humorous, all at once. The passage below is about racing cars but I thought it applicable to racing bicycles.
This is a rule of racing: No race has ever been won in the first corner; many have been lost there. He got caught in a bad spot.
"It just doesn't seem fair," Eve said. "It was the other driver's fault."
"If it was anybody's fault," Denny said, "it was mine for being where I could get collected."
This is something I'd heard him say before: getting angry at another driver for a driving incident is pointless. You need to watch the drivers around you, understand their skill, confidence, and aggression levels, and drive with them accordingly. Know who is driving next to you. Any problems that may occur have ultimately been caused by you, because you are responsible for where you are and what you are doing there.

Good quote. In the transfer from motorized racing to cycling, i've found crit racing in particular to be the discipline that alot of motorsports experience in general transfers over well into.
Although life without a throttle definitely changes the dynamics! :-)

Recommended reading for sure. Pat's wife recommended this book to me over the summer while we were on a bike ride. Even tho' its kinda 'bout racing cars... I bet a lot of you racers/dog lovers would think it a good read too... or your significant others The story takes place in Washington State. Authors web page: www.garthstein.com/

...you are responsible for where you are and what you are doing there. I know this and a particular crit all too well. Sometimes the lessons are learned the hard way. I'll just have to be faster next time.

Most will call this "Situational Awareness" and why everyone in the world is not taught it baffles me.
