I've noticed play in the drive train of my cross bike since I got it. Today I narrowed it down to the right pedal has play in it where it attaches to the drive side crank arm. The movement seems to be in the crank arm. It is an FSA crank. Is there some sort of insert where the crank arm threads are? The pedal is completely tightened. There is no play in the pedal axle.

Too much horsepower coming from the engine, obviously.

Do you have pedal washers between the pedals and the cranks? I installed a set of FSA cranks on my bike and the instructions were very explicit about the use of pedal washers. I read about a lot of people having trouble with FSA cranks if they did not use pedal washers.

I came to the same conclusion that Ron did: you're missing pedal washers. I've heard that the washer prevents marring of the carbon crank arm. I don't know if it's true, but it's worth a try.
A bad scenario: your pedal--without its washer screwed in--has ruined your crank. Maybe you screwed in the pedal too tight and have started to pull out the threading...

washers are present as required. The pedal axle is firmly attached. It seems the movement is inside the crank arm like there is some sort of loose insert.

What model crank is it and the year? What bike did it come on? is it OEM? What pedals are you using? Your on the right track, some of the FSA crank arms have an insert.

rode by twt after work, Dave Manino verified that it is a loose insert. Apparently nothing can be done with it. He said if I can prove it was purchased within 2 years, FSA would replace it. I think it's a K force, but I don't know what year.
