Greetings Spokane Rocket Velo:
Thank you for making 2009 another successful year for the club!
We had an exciting year:
- Club rides continued all year, from January through December. Thank you to our dedicated group ride leaders for making this possible.
- We hosted the Washington State Masters/Juniors State Championship road race and two Twilight series road races. Hosting these races took the combined efforts of the whole club (plus club member’s family and friends). In fact, when you total the volunteer positions for all three races, it was over 100 people. I think our rides and races were a great contribution to the local cycling scene and we could not have done it without you.
- SRV rider attendance at local events was great. Members participated in races including the 24-hour mountain bike race, road and stage races around the region, cyclocross, the Ironman, and even Bloomsday. All of our activities contributed nicely to Spokane’s cycling scene which seems to get stronger each year.
Now it's time to get excited about 2010. Here’s an update on what’s new and what to expect in the coming months.
Membership:
First, remember to renew for 2010. There are many good reasons to renew your membership with SRV. Your membership dues include the club picnic and other socials, a pair of SRV socks, and the opportunity to support a great club. And if that isn't convincing enough, racers need to be members in-good-standing for two reasons: to claim club membership on their USA Cycling racing license, and to avoid the $10 "unattached rider" fee when signing up at races.
The club board of directors has voted to raise dues to $35 for 2010. The increase was made because the club needs additional money for our activities, from purchasing race supplies to reimbursing volunteers to maintaining the webforum. However, from now until the end of December, you can pay for 2010 membership for only $25. Starting January 1st, dues will be $35.
Club Rides:
We rode thousands of great miles in 2009. The 2010 ride committee will be forming in the early part of the year. As always we are looking for ride leaders to be on the committee.
Our club rides are what we make of them. Do we want rides that encourage new riders to join us? Do we want club rides to be race training rides? How long and how fast should club rides be? These are the questions that will be addressed as we plan our 2010 riding season.
Winter Social: We’ll be having our annual winter social event in late January. Details to come.
Winter Indoor Training:
Indoor training sessions will start in January. Indoor sessions will typically involve the Joel Friel training series DVDs, but occasionally we'll just put in a movie. Rides have been traditionally been on Saturdays but we could also do weekday evenings if anyone is interested.
Race Team 2010:
We'll start meeting as a race team during the pre-season months of February and March. We like to get together in February to discuss everyone's plans for the season. “Plans” can mean anything from doing your first Twilight Series race to winning the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic. More formal race team rides will start in March when the weather is good enough for race-specific skill practices. Our race team rides usually taper down once the racing season starts because everyone sees each other at the races anyway.
Spokane Road Racing in 2010:
2010 should be the best road racing season that Spokane has seen in a few years. Each of the local teams is contributing races to the calendar. SRV is hosting four races for 2010. We'll again be asking for your help as the dates get closer! Here's a calendar preview:
April 3-4: Frozen Flatlands Omnium (hosted by Baddlands)
April 10th: Ronde Van Palouse – (hosted by SRV)
June 19th: Elite State Championship Criterium - Cheney (hosted by Emde)
June 20th: Elite State Championship Road Race - Cheney - (hosted by SRV)
April-August: Twilight Series (SRV hosting two races with-in Baddlands’ series)
Add the other semi-local races like Tour of Walla Walla, Wenatchee, and the Missoula races, and we'll have enough to keep us busy without having to cross Snoqualmie Pass. Isn't that nice? Check out the WSBA event calendar for more local and regional races: www.wsbaracing.com/schedule/2010
Sponsorship:
We are still looking for sponsors for the 2010 through 2011 seasons. We have several levels of sponsorship available and we welcome any local company interested in providing sponsorship. If you know of a business that might be interested in partnering with SRV, please email us.
Team Kits:
The new kits are a hit! Thanks again to Tim Lentz for heading up the redesign process. There will be another order with the Mt. Borah clothing company in the early part of the year. It looks like we have a six-piece minimum to get a particular item of clothing. Jerseys and bibs are a no-brainer. If anyone would like to order other items (e.g. jackets, vests, skin suites, or long sleeve jerseys) we can order them as long as we fulfill the six-piece minimum. Start thinking about your wish lists.
Team Bikes:
Well, not really. However, the local company Novation Inc. is offering custom bicycle frame painting at very reasonable prices. If you have a bike in need of a fresh coat of paint now is your chance to get team colors. A "test bike" is already in the works.
Last but not least, have a happy and safe holiday season! See you on the roads and trails.
