Whitworth participates in Spokane County Trip Reduction Program, an incentive program that tracks commuting miles, money saved, and carbon monoxide output. Often there are prizes for top commuters and some interesting stories. I just filled out my December Commuting Calendar (I already know how the month will play out) and this is my year's worth of savings by commuting just 9 miles a day by bike: One Way Miles Saved this Month: 70.5 miles; this Year: 1,041.0 miles Trips Reduced this Month: 15 trips; this Year: 227 trips Carbon Monoxide (CO) Reduced this Month: 4 pounds; this Year: 57 pounds Savings by Participating this Month: $40.18; this Year: $593.40 (According to AAA's annual "Your Driving Costs" study found at www.mycommute.org/calendar/help.php#drivingcost) Not a bad year. Okay here's my data from Mycommute.org . Not nearly as impressive, given my 1-mile commute:
You have used a commute alternative 86.96% (20 of 23 total working days) of this month so far
You have used a commute alternative 100% (20 of 20 your working days) of this month so far
One Way Miles Saved this Month: 19.5 this Year: 209.0
Trips Reduced this Month: 20 this Year: 211
Carbon Monoxide(CO) Reduced this Month: 1 pound this Year: 11 pounds
Savings by Participating this Month: $11.12 this Year: $119.13 *

I don't have any formal stats, but I know I saved a lot of money this year on gasoline with my commuting. Unfortunately I blew it all on bike parts For this year, my commuting mileage is somewhere around 4500 miles, but a lot of that was discretionary mileage. After I built my "rain bike" in ~May, I started taking a long route for base miles, and even longer routes when I felt like it. '82 Trek 311 with a value mix of modern parts

I consider the calculated figures to be more of a novelty than anything else. Sure, it looks good to say that I've saved $119.13 this year. Yeah that's one set of tires (out of 4-5 pairs I've bought this year??).
211 trips reduced? Great. 11 lbs CO? Great.
More than alt commuting, I think I'm doing my part by living close to work, shopping, and recreation. As opposed to having to drive 20 miles every time I step out of the house.
(never mind the fact that I drove 20 miles last night, bringing home the 2 hard core cyclists who insisted on starting a ride at 7-mile. wont mention any names)
