How was your commute today??
Mine was good: the sky was clear and the air was cool. Very refreshing.

In what city are you riding?! Phoenix?! I rode to work--in Spokane--and it was cold, wet, and slippery. In fact, I have never started a ride wondering when exactly I'm going to wreck. I can check that one off my list...

The ride home was also good. Stopped at the po to mail some letters.

Did anyone ride to work today I did and for the first time I thought I was going to have to walk! When I left all the roads were wet but half way to work everything turned to ICE! I was on my cross bike but it was a little scary on Argonne in the dark in traffic on ICE. BUT IT’S STILL BETTER THAN DRIVING!!!

Nice job Ron. I can't imagine riding on Argonne in the morning traffic, let alone with ice. I noticed a little black ice on my way in this AM on NW BLVD, but it wasn't too bad. I haven't put my studs on yet, but I imagine if we get another freeze I'll need to. ~ Mike S

How much of an improvement do you get with studs. I’m not sure if they will fit on my bike. Right now I am running 700x31 cross tires with only a couple mm's of clearance on my front fork.

The improvement in traction with studs is like night and day. Studs turn a glare-ice road into your playground.
The downside: lots of rolling resistance and they're expensive.
Hard to say if 700 studs would fit your bike. You might be able to convince Sprute to let you demo his 700x35 Nokian studs.

If you can afford studded tires, go for it; studs make icy roads more like fresh, smooth, asphalt. They're amazing.
