President's Report 2009
Hello Everyone. Here are a few updates from Spokane Rocket Velo.
Upcoming Events:
Winter Social: The annual winter social will be at Rocky Rococo's Pizza on Thursday night, January 29 at 6 p.m. See your summer riding friends, meet new members, and talk about the upcoming season. SRV will be buying pizza for the night.
Racer Meeting: Thursday, February 5, at 7 p.m. I want to meet with everyone in the club who's thinking about racing this year. What are your goals? What races do you plan to do? What category will you be racing? How can the team help you race? Don't know the answers to any of the above? That's okay too. Meet at my house at 7 p.m.
Ride Committee Meeting: Details TBA
SRV Club Rides:
The Saturday rides continued to be a hit in 2008. Our Saturday rides take on the personality of the ride leaders and the riders that show for them. Will the ride be a 30 to 40 mile easy spin through north Spokane County or will it be a 130 mile epic through the "wild west"? Depends on who's leading the ride. Official Saturday rides will start again in March. Check the forum and ride page of the website for more information on the rides each week.
Whether your ideal Saturday ride is 20 miles or 200 miles, we want your input on the SRV Ride Committee. Your club has many riders with diverse interests and it's hard to please everyone every week. That's why we have a discussion every year about the "ideal" Saturday ride and we want you to be part of that conversation. In the end though, the club rides always take on the character of those who show up to ride every week. Ride on.
Racing in Spokane:
In 2008 SRV hosted two Twilight Series road races and hosted a series of four pre-season cyclocross clinics. We have even bigger plans for 2009.
In 2009 we'll be putting on a weekend of Washington State Championship bicycle racing. Save the date on Saturday, June 27, 2009, when SRV will be hosting the Washington State Masters and Juniors State Championship Road Race. Then, the very next day, on Sunday, June 28, Team Emde Sports will be hosting the Masters State Championship Criterium. Yeah, we know: that's Hoopfest weekend; the dates were chosen because they fit into the busy Washington State Bicycling Association (WSBA) racing calendar.
In 2008 we introduced a new course to the Twilight Series; by most accounts "Double Trouble" was a hit. We will probably use the same course on two nights of the Twilight Series again in 2009.
Spokane Rocket Velo's Race Team:
This year we've seen success in both road and mountain bike racing. SRV turnout at the Twilight Series has been great. It's been very exciting to see friends and teammates move through the ranks of amateur racing. In the Twilight Series, we've had three SRV racers, Ron Belfils, Don Belfils, and Peter Martin, upgrade from the "C" category to the "B" category. We've also had five SRV racers upgrade from the "B" category to the "A" category. Considering USA Cycling categories, we had many racers upgrade from Cat 5 to Cat 4. We have four teammates, Alan Jacob, Scott Cooley, Scott Buzan, and me, who upgraded from Cat 4 to Cat 3. Sorry, I know I've left a few racers out. Nice job to everyone who raced last season.
Everyone is looking forward to the 2009 racing season, which starts on the Westside on March 7, and in Spokane on April 4 with the Frozen Flatlands. Again, we will be having a race team meeting on February 5 at 7 p.m. As the road season gets closer look for more team rides and clinics geared toward getting ready for the first races.
But what about mountain biking? For reasons that nobody can quite explain, numbers at mountain bike races have gone down. Still, SRV racers represented well at the local mountain bike races. The SRV corporate team won first place at the 24-Hours Round The Clock Race.
We had just a few club members race cyclocross this year. You know who you are! I'd like to increase these numbers for next year.
Club Communication:
Email: We try to keep our email list up to date. Keep us up to date with your current email addresses. We also realize that people move on and develop other interests. If you would like to be removed from the email list, please let us know and we'll happily delist you.
SRV Website: We'll continue to update the SRV webpage as we get into the 2009 season. The page is not perfect but it's functional. The SRV web forum and calendar are also great places to look for the most up-to-date club rides and general mayhem.
Membership:
We want to ride and race with you whether you are a member or not. That being said, membership dues are only $25 per year and go to a good cause. Your dues go toward funding our annual expenses (e.g. insurance, race permits, the webpage, and club social functions like the annual picnic and winter social). We appreciate your support! Attached you'll find a membership application for 2009. Dues can be paid by cash or check to "Spokane Rocket Velo" and delivered to North Division Bicycle Shop, or paid online by PayPal at the following link: www.spokanerocketvelo.com/payspokanerocketvelo (if paying via PayPal, please also mail or drop off a completed membership form; the paper form is still required for our records).
Clothing:
For the first time, we've ordered custom SRV socks from Sock Guy. Check them out here: www.spokanerocketvelo.com/2008-2009teamkits. The socks are only $6.00 per pair and can be purchased at our PayPal link above. The Squadra clothing order is being finalized this week. This is the last call for clothing orders.
Welcome to 2009. Get ready for a great season!
