March 2009 SRV Update
Happy Spring Spokane Rocket Velo! Here is what’s new and exciting.
SRV Group Rides:
Check the web calendar and web forum for the most up to date information on the week’s rides. If you have an idea for a ride or would like to lead a ride, submit a request to our ride coordinators (Dale and Rick): www.spokanerocketvelo.com/ridedescriptionform The riding this month has been good and getting better. We look forward to seeing you on the roads soon.
SRV Race Team:
The 2009 season has begun. Come to the SRV team meeting and ride on Wednesday April 1st at 5:00pm. Meet at the Cabin Coffee (now called something else I think) in Browns Edition. We’ll have a briefing on the courses, weather conditions, teams, and tactics for Frozen Flatlands. This will be followed by a 20 mile ride around the “river loop” at an easy to moderate pace. Some will want to do a few short intervals to wake up your legs for the weekend. We’ll regroup frequently. This is a no drop ride. If the weather is questionable check the forum for changes. If it's raining at least we should be able to have some discussion at the coffee shop or the Elk.
SRV Race Promotion in 2009:
SRV will be hosting the 2009 Masters/Juniors Washington State Championship Road Race. This will be the biggest race SRV has ever hosted. Planning for this race is moving forward rapidly and we will have more details for you in the near future. We've set up a dedicated web subforum for the event with answers to frequently asked questions and the ability to post other questions.
We’re also bringing back the “Double Trouble Road Race” as part of the Tuesday Night Twilight Series on June 2nd, and August 4th. The racing should be even better this year because 1) local riders have been talking about the course and know the strategies to use, and 2) we as promoters are gaining experience putting on these races.
Volunteers:
Contact Alan Jacob by email (spokanerocketvelo@gmail.com) if you or someone you know can to volunteer for any of the three races. SRV members that are racing should consider bringing a friend of family member to volunteer while you race. I can tell you from experience that this is a great way to get supportive friends and family involved in the hobby you love so much. Baddlands Cycling is also looking for volunteers for Frozen Flatlands. Contact Alex at Baddlands@baddlands.org if you can help out. Remember that local racing can not happen without volunteers.
2009 Membership:
Thank you to everyone who’s signed up and paid 2009 dues! For those that haven’t, it’s not too late. Why pay dues? The $25 membership dues help subsidize our club’s expenses. Included in your dues are our annual picnic, discounts at our races, and new this year, a complimentary pair of custom SRV socks from Sock Guy (while they last). Dues also help subsidize our website, web forum, USA Cycling membership cost, office supplies and other things. If all that doesn’t persuade you, there are also “unattached” rider fees at races for those that aren’t connected with a club. We’ve made it easy to pay online via PayPal. SRV PayPal page.
Event Promotion Equipment:
SRV relies on the good spirit of other local organizations to support us in putting on our events. We use some equipment from the Parks Department, but mostly we use equipment owned by Baddlands Cycling. Thanks to our generous sponsors over the years, we are starting to purchase equipment to contribute to the local bicycle riding, training, and racing scene. After a lot of thought and discussion, this year SRV has ordered a custom Interstate cargo trailer to haul equipment for event promotion. As the club continues to prosper we’ll be adding more equipment to our collection and now we’ll have a way to haul and store things. We hope to have the trailer within the next month or so. Stay tuned for a “trailer work day party”, an idea borrowed from Baddlands, to see it and get it ready for action.
That’s all for now. I look forward to riding with you all this year!
