Posted for a new SRV member, Josiah Brown:
"I want to give Cyclocross a try this fall, but I dont have the money to buy a bike if I don't enjoy it, I was wondering if you knew anyone with an old or extra bike that I could borrow/rent for couple of the practice races in CDA this month?"
Can anyone help him out? And while you're at it, why not lend me a bike too?...
Alan

How tall is Josiah? An estimate will do.

How tall is Josiah? An estimate will do. Anyone...? Alan, I think you'd fit OK on one of my hardtail mountain bikes, if you want to use one. Both of them are light enough for a bit of cyclocross, around 22-24 pounds depending on tires.

I don't know exactly how tall he is; I've never seen him off a bike. But guessing from his stance on a bike, I'm thinking he's just shy of 6 feet.

Ok cool. I have three candidate bikes. All of them currently have Shimano SPD pedals. The drivetrains all have plenty of wear on them already, so there's no need to worry about wearing them out. Specialized Stumpjumper This is a 26" hardtail. It has a front suspension fork that has a lockout. 2x9 drivetrain (11-32 with a 32-44). I can neither confirm nor deny rumors that it features warp drive.Gary Fisher Ziggurat This is another 26" hardtail, with a rigid fork. Very nimble handling. The reach is very long on this bike. I can probably dredge up a shorter stem if the rider needs a shorter reach. 2x9 drivetrain (11-32 with a 34-48). Soma Smoothie ES This is a sturdy 58cm road/sport bike with longer-reach caliper brakes. It could probably handle treaded 700 x 32 'cross tires with some room to spare, maybe even 35s. I don't have any cyclocross tires of my own, so you'd have to supply your own tires. 2x9 drivetrain (12-26 with a 39-52). I need either the Soma or the Ziggurat as my daily driver, so if both of you want to borrow bikes, someone's going to be on the Stumpjumper

Hey this is Josiah. I appreciate you being willing to loan me a bike. I would like to borrow the gary fisher or the soma, whichever you prefer I use. I dont have a car, however Alan said he could pick it up and bring it to Whitworth for me. I only plan on borrowing it for a couple weeks, because if I do enjoy cross than I plan on purchasing my own bike. Thanks

I'll set up the Gary Fisher for you to try out first, should be ready to go tomorrow I'll be seeing Alan at the ride tonight and talk to him about that. If you get the hankering to try a drop-bar bike, you can always get cyclocross tires and try the Soma next.

Hey Josiah, I talked with Alan. Scheduling a hand-off of the bike via Alan might take a day or two, and the first practice race is the 9th.
How does this sound: I'll just leave the bike at North Division Bike Shop by about noon tomorrow, with instructions to hand it over to you. You're up at Whitworth, right? So they're just around the corner.

That works, though I wont make it to the first practice anyway. So which ever way is easier. Thanks again.

Have fun with it. But seriously a mountain bike is only a temporary solution to racing on a course designed for cyclocross. You'll get a taste of the action but when you're ready to buy a new bike, there is no bike more versital than a cx bike.

The Ziggurat is at North Division Bike Shop for pickup The seatpost is currently about 5mm below its maximum extension, it's not a super-long one. If you need a longer seatpost to fit your leg length, let me know and I'm sure I can scrounge one up. But the bike's an XL, so it'll probably be fine. With the relatively wide-range rear gearing, I wouldn't be surprised if you pretty much leave it in the 48-tooth chainring all the time for the races. NDBS also had some cyclocross bikes on display, so you might want to check them out while you're in there. Have fun!
