Saturday Ride Frequently Asked Questions
"How fast do you guys ride?"
We get asked this question a lot. We ride much slower than some group rides, and we ride much faster than other group rides. If you come out to ride with us, you'll probably find that our rides are either too fast, or too slow. We suggest you come with an open mind.
But here is some advice to follow if you’re thinking about coming out to ride with SRV. Scott Willegalle at North Division Bicycle Shop recommends that before coming on a Saturday ride, you ride the “river loop” twice, as fast as you can.

If you can do it in 1:45, you are ready to do a Saturday ride. That’s about a 17 mph average over 30 miles of rolling terrain.
“Does the group ride together for the whole ride”
This depends on the ride. Generally we will split into at least two groups early in the ride: A faster, longer distance group, and a slower, shorter distance group. Within the groups there will be riders with varying goals and abilities. Some faster riders may go ahead of the bunch, but ride leaders of the smaller groups insure frequent regroups. We have never left anyone out on the open road.
“What kind of bike do I need?”
We recommend that you bring a standard road bicycle. Although it’s been done, we don’t recommend tri-bikes, mountain bikes, or hybrids. We also suggest that your bike be in good mechanical condition with fresh tires, a lubed chain, adjusted gears, and working brakes. The crew at North Division will be happy to help you get set up. (although the Saturday morning before the ride is the wrong time to get your bike adjusted at the shop )
“What else should I bring?”
You’ll need a helmet, spare tube, pump/CO2, water, a snack, a cell phone, and pretty much whatever you need to be self sufficient.
“Do I need to be a member of the club?”
No. But we ask that non-members sign a “release of liability” form on your first ride with us. (SRV members have already signed the needed form).
"Do Saturday Rides always leave from North Division Bicycle Shop?"
No. Although we love the convenience of leaving from our sponsor shop, we also like the variety of rides that the region has to offer. Therefore the start location varies. See the next post for more details...
