Spokane Rocket Party, a 4-man team for the upcoming 24 race, is looking for a volunteer to help for four hours during this weekend's 24-hour mountain bike race.
We will provide free beer and food to our volunteer and treat you with the respect you desire: Mike Sirott will lick your shoes, Alan Jacob will endlessly lavish you with compliments about your snazzy attire, and Bill Evans and David Goode will fan you with palm fronds while playing soothing music.
If you think you can help us out, please email ajacob@whitworth.edu or call (509) 466-9548 or (509) 777-3250 to speak with Alan.
Here's an explaination of what you'd be doing for us...
Volunteers
The volunteer sign up (mandatory for all teams) will be open Friday night at 6pm and Saturday morning at registration. Volunteers or their team captain must sign up for their shift of choice. Sign ups for shifts will be on a first come - first choice basis. Teams are subject to disqualification if a volunteer is not provided or doesn't show. Each volunteer shift is 4 hours..one person works the entire 4 hour shift unless in the timing tent, where shifts can be split by 2 people.
The volunteer meeting will be at 10:45am Saturday morning. This meeting will help volunteers learn what each shift will entail. We will supply radios and all equipment that volunteers will need. Please provide yourselves with appropriate clothing to suit the weather conditions.
Volunteers need to show up 20 minutes prior to their shift. This will allow time to explain responsibilities to the volunteers and take them to their designated stations. Being early ensures that no other person will be stuck at their post for longer than their shift.
Volunteer Shifts:
Saturday
11:30am - 4pm, 4pm-8pm, 8pm-midnight
Sunday
12 midnight-4am, 4am - 8am, 8am-noon
Volunteer Positions
Recorder - Like being smack dab in the middle of things? This one's for you.as riders complete their laps, the recorder writes down the racer's bib number on a sheet. Dress for any type of weather. Person must be able to stay alert.
Timing Tent Volunteers - The timing tent is where it all makes a difference. It's a fun, fast paced area. When riders complete laps, the Timing Tent volunteers record lap times and number of laps completed for each team as well as sign in riders going out for the next lap. There are several volunteers and staff in the tent to help out.
Checkpoint Volunteers - Probably the most valuable volunteers out there!!
Checkpoints are strategically located along the course and are a haven for tired riders. Volunteers hand out Heed (sponsored by Hammer Gel) and water to the riders and record rider numbers as they pass by. Checkpoints are also supplied with radios or cell phones, kerosene lanterns and flashlights.
Dismount Volunteers - At the finish line, your job is to make sure
riders dismount prior to entering the timing tent.
Miscellaneous Volunteers - After all key positions are filled, there are still things that come up during an event. The miscellaneous volunteers are assigned to jobs where they are needed. Duties will be explained at the volunteer check-in times.
